hi archyive

I would have missed out if I played it safe.

I had a town who threatened to arrest me because I was holding a prayer meeting on Good Friday at the town common.  I told them they would have to arrest me I had a right to be there and the prayer meeting would go forward.  It is the first time I went to a prayer meeting with a lawyer.

We were a church plant and we were renting.  One Sunday we arrived at the church and the town had locked us out.

When we met at our own building and had to do renovation the town was denying us an occupancy permit even though we met every criteria.

We also started a biker ministry. This ministry reached out to the 1%.  Those of you unfamiliar with that phrase, those are bikers who are in groups like the Hell’s Angels.  The 1% we were reaching was the Outlaws.  At times we had to pray for safety because at an event that was being attended gun play was a real possibility.

During this a phrase by CS Lewis that always ran through my head.  It is from his book, “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe”.  Premise of the story is that four children end up in the land of Narnia.  The witch is after them.  In Narnia the animals can talk.

The Beavers are trying to get the children to Aslan.  Aslan is a lion and the king.  He represents Jesus Christ.  The children ask if Aslan is safe and I love the response.

“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you?  Who said anything about safe?  ‘Course he isn’t safe.  But he’s good.  He’s the King, I tell you.”

Playing it safe doesn’t get the results you are looking for.  If I played it safe, we would have never had the impact we did.

Starting a new business, trying to get your church to rebound, begin a new career will require moments that aren’t safe.  You will have to step out not knowing what will happen.  You hope it will go one way.  You hope you know what the result will be.  There are no guarantees.  If you aren’t willing to step out, it will be difficult to succeed or get the change necessary to go forward.

One thing I have learned is that safe maybe comfortable but stepping out you get to see amazing things happen and you get to see what you are truly capable of doing. Added bonus I was able to see God do incredible miracles.
